Overall, it is a great wildlife refuge worth visiting in different seasons and in early morning or late afternoon, in order to better appreciate the wildlife present in the area in each season. Also a good long lens will make a great difference as part of your camera gear (for the bird photographers). Once I was done with the easy hiking portion of the visit, I did the one-way driving trail, which took my about 1.5 hours as I was stopping periodically to spot and photograph birds and flowers. The trail itself is very easy to walk (only 1 mile long) and the trees provide good shade from the sun. I parked by the Visitor's Center (which is closed indefinitely due to the pandemic) and explored the outside of the building. There may be more bird/animal activity earlier in the morning or in the late afternoon. During this visit I was able to spot some of the most common birds (e.g., red-winged Black Birds, sparrows, Canadian geese, ducks, a solitary egret) but I did not spot any bold eagles, mammals or reptiles. The sun was already up due to the very early sunrise, so there was no warm early sunlight for more interesting photo shoots. I visited it in early July around 8:00 am (it was a hot summer day).
